tolly's lament

sometimes the pain is so great
the failure so straight
the compassion too late
the mind cannot support the weight

did the wrong
was where did not belong
evidence is strong
enduring is long

cannot take what is to come
cannot hide from the funeral drum
deserve only to succumb
fate is sealed and am numb

ending is better sometime
death the only sublime
only control is to climb
to punish my own crime

take my life in stride
honest to the end arrive
self punishment derived
only peace in suicide

Better peace in self-forgiveness. How long are you going to punish yourself? Even God has forgiven you. Now you need to as well.

Hi Kerri,

I do often write from a position of pain because I find my most honest thoughts come from deep personal struggle. However, I do not only write from my own experience. I find that I can delve deeply into the human experience by immersing myself vicariously into the experiences and feelings of others.

This particular piece was inspired by a very tragic story. A local public figure made the tragic decision to drive intoxicated. After veering down a construction closed road he struck and killed a pedestrian and then slammed into a home seriously injuring his passenger.

After spending the weekend in jail, due to his local recognition he was unfortunately released under his own care to await trial. He immediately went to his home and took his own life.

This small lament is my interpretation of what his thought process may have been that led him to his macabre action.

Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement and your continued reading. I hope that somehow my words inspire you to examine the human condition on some level that you may not normally go.
